We do not condone crime in any shape or form, but at the same time, we do not condone the cruel and unusual punishment of the prisoners, a serious issue deeply rooted in the 8th amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The latest trend that the US Supreme Court offered to consider is evaluating cruel and unusual punishment based on "evolving standards of decency that mark the progress of a maturing society (Rutherford Institute)".

In other words, nothing is written in stone anymore, and as society evolves the way we perceive "cruel and unusual" also evolves. We welcome policies that promote and facilitate new forms of communication with the incarcerated, applying the same technologies used by the rest of us. If we are to evolve as a society we cannot leave behind millions of our citizens and pretend they don't exist.

Prisoner's contact with family, friends and the rest of the world is essential to their rehabilitation; eventually, the vast majority of them will come home one day. There is no greater gift you can give to a stranger than a few words of encouragement when he needs it most.
